CU Cancer Center’s partners ranked among best by U.S. News & World Report

The University of Colorado Cancer Center’s lead adult cancer care partner, University of Colorado Hospital (UCH), has been ranked the best hospital in Colorado and one of the 25 best in the United States for cancer care.UCH NEW EXTERIOR

The U.S. News Best Hospitals 2013-14 report examined almost 5,000 hospitals across the nation, including 30 in the Denver metro area, to rank the best performers in 16 adult specialties.  Best Hospitals was created more than 20 years ago to identify hospitals exceptionally skilled in handling the most difficult cases, and the rankings are driven mostly by objective data including survival rates and patient safety.

Cancer care at UCH made a significant jump in the U.S. News rankings going from No. 34 to No. 23. UCH is where the majority of CU Cancer Center clinical care is delivered and clinical research is conducted.

“CU Cancer Center’s clinical partners at UCH bring the most advanced and effective cancer treatments to the people of Colorado and the Rocky Mountain region,” says Dan Theodorescu, MD, PhD, director of CU Cancer Center. “We look forward to continuing this partnership with a hospital committed to discovering new, better ways of treating cancer.”

U.S. News & World Report’s 2013-14 Best Children’s Hospitals rankings were released in June 2013. Children’s Hospital Colorado is CU Cancer Center’s partner in pediatric oncology. Children’s Colorado ranked No. 7 among all children’s hospitals nationally and No. 9 in cancer care.

CU Cancer Center is the only National Cancer Institute-designated comprehensive cancer center in the Rocky Mountain region, and one of only 44 in the country. Earlier this year, it was named a member of the elite National Comprehensive Cancer Network (NCCN), an alliance of the world’s leading cancer centers dedicated to improving the quality, effectiveness and efficiency of care provided to patients with cancer. The NCCN produces clinical practice guidelines for most types of cancers that are widely used by oncologists in the United States.

“Our faculty will participate not only in cancer research treatment innovations, but now also contribute to practice guidelines for the nation” says Theodorescu.
